Supporting Breastfeeding Success
While breastfeeding is a natural process, it doesn’t always come naturally, and it can be a different experience from one child to the next.
This was the case for Katherine, who has shared her story of breastfeeding success thanks to the support from staff at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital (WCH).
Katherine recently had her second baby, Nina, through the WCH Group Midwifery Program and has benefited from the expertise of our staff’s breastfeeding support.
Her first child Teo had a tongue tie and small jaw, which made breastfeeding painful for the first few months. With the support of her midwife, Katherine persevered and continued breastfeeding Teo until he was 2 years old and she was 28 weeks pregnant with her daughter, Nina.
Thanks to the advice received from her midwife second time around, breast feeding Nina has been a very different experience.
“I’m so grateful for all the advice I received from my midwife Alli and student midwife Bec. Despite feeding my toddler, I definitely needed a reminder of how to teach a newborn to feed and how to protect my nipples from damage,” said Katherine.
The Women’s and Children’s Health Network is also proud to be officially accredited under the International Baby Friendly Health Initiative (BFHI) which highlights our commitment to implementing the best infant feeding practices by creating an environment that protects, promotes, and supports breastfeeding.
Katherine says she’s grateful to be able to benefit from the knowledge and support of the WCH staff when it came to breastfeeding.
“They were really supportive at the home visits and reassured me by checking my daughter’s latch and giving tips about different holds to help her latch better and help me with engorgement in those early days,“ Katherine says.
The WCH offers free breastfeeding support to mothers who have birthed or are planning to birth at the hospital. For more information and for lots of useful fact sheets and links visit:
